He is a national disgrace: Donald Trump attacks London Mayor Sadiq Khan

Washington, June 16 (IBNS): US President Donald Trump on Sunday criticised London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who is a Muslim of Pakistani heritage, and called him a 'national disgrace'.

Trump even said that the Mayor was destroying the city of London.

" He is a national disgrace who is destroying the City of London!," he tweeted.

In another tweet, Trump said: "LONDON needs a new mayor ASAP. Khan is a disaster - will only get worse!"

The US President's remarks came in response to a series of attacks in London that left three people dead in the space of 24 hours, reported CNN.

Trump made the comment in his first post as he retweeted a remark by the right-wing commentator Katie Hopkins.

Katie said: "20 hours in Stab-City UPDATE 2 stabbed to death1 shot dead Three stabbed - but not dead. Wandsworth & Tower Hamlets This is Khan’s Londonistan."

According to a report by CNN, Khan did not respond in person to Trump's criticism, but his spokesman said the mayor was "focusing on supporting London's communities and over-stretched emergency services."

"He has been in regular touch with senior Met police officers last night and throughout the day. His thoughts are with the victims' families. He is not going to waste his time responding to this sort of tweet," said the spokesman.

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, however, criticised Trump's remark against the Mayor and tweeted: "Absolutely awful to see @realDonaldTrump using the tragedy of people being murdered to attack the Mayor. @SadiqKhan is rightly supporting the police to do their job while Katie Hopkins spreads hateful and divisive rhetoric. They seek to divide at a time we need to come together."

US President Donald Trump earlier this month visited the UK and even criticised London Mayor Saddiq Khan.

Trump called the Mayor a 'stone cold loser'.

".@SadiqKhan, who by all accounts has done a terrible job as Mayor of London, has been foolishly “nasty” to the visiting President of the United States, by far the most important ally of the United Kingdom. He is a stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London, not me," tweeted Trump.

A spokesman for Khan said the "childish insults should be beneath the president of the United States", reported BBC.

In response to Trump's tweets, a spokesman for Khan was quoted as saying by BBC: "This is much more serious than childish insults which should be beneath the president of the United States."

"Sadiq is representing the progressive values of London and our country warning that Donald Trump is the most egregious example of growing far right threat around the globe."
