Two suspected members of the Islamic State terrorist militia have been arrested in western Germany, authorities said on Wednesday.

The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office said the two Iraqi men were arrested on Tuesday in Trier and Delbrück.

They are alleged to have been members of Islamic State for several months in Iraq in 2016 and 2017.

According to prosecutors, one of them was a fighter, while the other worked for a Sharia committee.

They have been charged with membership of a terrorist organization abroad.

The premises of the two men and three other suspects in Trier, Delbrück, Cologne, Chemnitz and Wittmund were searched on Tuesday.

The two arrested men have already been brought before the investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe and have been remanded in custody.
