From Kabaddi to Courtroom: Three Indian-origin men sent to prison over violence during 2023 UK kabaddi event
Three Indian-origin men have been arrested and jailed in the UK for their involvement in violent disorder during a kabaddi tournament in Derby in England’s East Midlands region in 2023.
According to a statement issued by Derbyshire Constabulary, violence erupted between two groups during the kabaddi event in Alvaston in the summer of 2023, leaving several people injured.
Police said Damanjit Singh, Boota Singh and Rajvinder Takhar Singh were all involved in the disorder.
Video footage from the event showed Boota Singh running after members of the opposing group. Although he was not carrying a weapon during the incident, officers later stopped his car two days after the violence and recovered two machetes from the boot, police said.
Footage also showed Damanjit Singh and Rajvinder Takhar Singh carrying large knives during the disorder.
All three men were arrested and charged. They denied the allegations but were found guilty following a trial at Derby Crown Court in November.
Boota Singh, 35, of Witham Drive, Derby, was convicted of violent disorder and admitted possession of an offensive weapon at the start of the trial. He was sentenced to four years in prison.
Damanjit Singh, 35, of Powell Place, Tipton, was convicted of violent disorder and possession of a bladed article and sentenced to three years and four months in prison. He was convicted in his absence.
Rajvinder Takhar Singh, 42, of Patterdale Drive, Huddersfield, was convicted of violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon and sentenced to three years and ten months in prison.
