Washington, Jan 19 (IBNS): Former US President George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara Bush were both hospitalised, officials said.

92-year-old Bush has been admitted to intensive care at Houston Methodist Hospital.

The former President's spokesman Jim McGrath said Bush has been suffering an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia.

"Doctors performed a procedure to protect and clear his airway that required sedation," read the statement.

The former President is 'stable'.

Barbara Bush has also been hospitalised.

The statement issued by Jim McGrath said she was admitted to the hospital as a precaution after "experiencing fatigue and coughing."
