Ex Russian lawmaker shot dead in Kiev

| | Mar 24, 2017, at 03:22 pm
Kiev, Mar 24 (IBNS): Former Russian MP and a strong critic of President Vladimir Putin, Denis Voronenkov has been gunned down in Kiev, media reports said.

The incident took place on Thursday near central Kiev's upscale Premiere Palace hotel, a report in The Guardian read.

The deceased had renounced his Russian citizenship and fled to Ukraine in 2016 along with his opera singer and lawmaker wife Maria Maksakova.

Following his arrival in Ukraine he was granted citizenship.

Condemning the incident, Ukraine’s president Petro Poroshenko has called it an act of "state terrorism", with all fingers pointed towards the Kremlin.

Voronenkov was shot three times by the assassin, before a gun fight ensured between the latter and the former's bodyguards.

The assassin, who sustained injuries in the gunfight, later succumbed to his wounds.

However, Putin's spokesperson has rubbished the claim and stated that it is absurd to look for a Kremlin connection his Voronenkov's assassination.
