Drone chaos: Gatwick Airport's runway reopens

| @indiablooms | Dec 21, 2018, at 06:47 pm

London, Dec 21 (IBNS):  The Gatwick Airport's runway has reopened once again, days after it remained closed for drone spotting incidents.

The Gatwick is considered as the second busiest airport in the UK.

The airport tweeted: "Friday 09.30: Gatwick's runway is now available and aircraft are arriving and departing. There are knock-on delays and cancellations to flights and we strongly recommend that you check the status of your flight with your airline before setting out for the airport today."

The Sussex Police tweeted: "With support from @SurreyPolice @MetPoliceUK and the military we have significantly increased our presence at @Gatwick_Airport to mitigate further #drone threats. #GatwickAirport has now recommenced flights although this remains under constant review."

Gatwick chief operating officer Chris Woodroofe told BBC "mitigating measures" from the government and military had given him "confidence to reopen".

Police have not arrested a single drone operator.

155 flights have been cancelled so far.

As per the BBC report, police have been locked in a game of cat and mouse with the drone, and have received about 50 reports of the device being flown near the airfield since Wednesday evening.
