Donald Trump directs Pompeo to cancel North Korea trip

Washington, Aug 25 (IBNS): US President Donald Trump on Saturday directed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to cancel his trip to North Korea.

Trump said he directed Pompeo to take the step as there is lack of progress on the Peninsula denuclearization issue.

"I have asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo not to go to North Korea, at this time, because I feel we are not making sufficient progress with respect to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," Trump tweeted.

"Additionally, because of our much tougher Trading stance with China, I do not believe they are helping with the process of denuclearization as they once were (despite the UN Sanctions which are in place)..Secretary Pompeo looks forward to going to North Korea in the near future, most likely after our Trading relationship with China is resolved. In the meantime I would like to send my warmest regards and respect to Chairman Kim. I look forward to seeing him soon!," he said.

US appoints special representative for North Korea:

With an aim of establishing fully verified denuclearization of North Korea, the US government recently appointed Steve Biegun as the country's special representative for North Korea.

"Good morning, everyone. I’m excited to announce this morning that Steve Biegun is joining our team as the special representative for North Korea," US State Secretary Mike Pompeo earlier said.

He said: "Steve will direct U.S. policy towards North Korea and lead our efforts to achieve President Trump’s goal of the final, fully verified denuclearization of North Korea, as agreed to by Chairman Kim Jong-un."

Biegun said all oppurtunities should be grabbed to establish a 'peaceful future' for North Korea.

Historic meet:

Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ended months of hard talks to meet in Singapore in June.

This was the first meet between the two leaders.
