Chittagong, Feb 24 (IBNS): Security forces shot dead a man in his mid twenties who tried to hijack Bangladesh Biman BG-147 on Sunday evening, media reports said.

The incident took place when the Dhaka-Dubai flight made a stopover at Chittagong airport.

Local media said the suspect identified himself as Mahadi and was carrying a gun. He had pointed a gun at the pilot and said he wanted to speak to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The man spoke Bengali and appeared to be a Bangladeshi.

All 148 passengers and crew are safe.

An air force officer kept the suspect engaged in conversation while the commandoes stormed the aircraft and shot him dead, said reports.

The airport had been closed since 5.40 pm when the hijack drama began and security forces surrounded the aircraft. Flight operations resumed shortly after 10 in the night.
