China calls international community to unfreeze Afghanistan's assets frozen abroad

| @indiablooms | Nov 23, 2021, at 11:33 pm

Beijing: China has urged the international community to ensure release of Afghanistan's assets frozen abroad as the south Asian country is still struggling to fight against the growing poverty.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters: "As you mentioned Afghanistan still faces a grave economic situation at the moment, the international community should strengthen solidarity and cooperation, promptly lend a helping hand and support Afghanistan in improving people's livelihood."

"Unilateral sanctions, especially Afghanistan's frozen assets overseas, are collective punishment on all Afghans and are worsening the humanitarian disaster in the country,"  Lijian said.

"The frozen assets should be returned to the real owners as soon as possible instead of being used as a tool for threats and coercion," he added.

The West has blocked Afghanistan's access to its foreign reserves to the tune of $10 billion since the Taliban took control over Afghanistan on Aug 15.
