Toronto, Oct 5 (IBNS): A Toronto principal has been charged with an assault against an elementary school student, media reports said.

The incident occurred at Chester Elementary School in the East York area of Toronto on Sept 19.

Police said a nine-year old child was fighting along with another child on field. It was then the principal, who has been identified as Sean Hume, tried to intervene.

The child began to spit at the principal but the latter initially wrapped his arms around the child.

Toronto Police Constable Allyson Douglas-Cook has been quoted by CTV News as saying, "Allegedly, the child began to throw objects and he allegedly spat on the principal."

"The child was actually shoved to the ground and the principal then stomped on the child allegedly, and kicked the child.”

The parents of the child reported to the altercation to the Children's Aid Society which later contacted police, said Douglas-Cook.

Hume was charged with an assault and had appeared before the court on the same day.
