Canada shooting case: Indian-origin man killed in ‘targeted’ attack

Police in Canada’s Burnaby have described the killing of a 28-year-old Indian-origin man as a “targeted shooting,” indicating a possible link to organised gang violence.

The victim has been identified as Dilraj Singh Gill, a resident of Vancouver. Police said Gill was “known to police” and that the shooting appears to have a nexus to the ongoing BC gang conflict.

According to Burnaby RCMP, the incident occurred on January 22, 2026, just before 5:30 p.m., when frontline officers responded to reports of gunfire near the 3700 block of Canada Way.

“When police arrived on scene, they located a male victim. Despite life-saving efforts, the man did not survive,” police said in a statement.

Shortly after the shooting, officers discovered a vehicle engulfed in flames in the 5000 block of Buxton Street. Investigators later confirmed that the burned vehicle is connected to the homicide and are actively working to gather more information related to it.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the probe.

“Homicide investigators are working closely with the Burnaby RCMP, the Lower Mainland District Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS), and the BC Coroners Service to collect evidence and advance the investigation,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT.

“A shooting, especially in a public place, is extremely troubling—not only for police but for the entire community. Information from witnesses and those in the area will be crucial to ensure this investigation progresses and those responsible are held accountable,” she added.

IHIT investigators are urging witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage captured between 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on January 22, 2026, to come forward.
