Canada: Senate to question government on Marijuana bill ahead of legalisation
Ottawa, Feb 6 (IBNS): With five months to go for the legalisation of Marijuana in the country, the Senate will question a panel of government representatives over the Marijuana bill in an unprecedented televised meeting in the Upper Chamber on Tuesday, media reports said.
The Senate will meet in a committee as a whole to question the Liberal ministers regarding the proposed change in the C-45 bill that legalises marijuana across the country.
Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould, Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale and justice and health parliamentary secretary Bill Blair will be offered questions by the Senators.
Peter Harder, Government representative in the Senate, told CTV News: "This is an attempt to ensure that on an issue of such importance to the Senate, we hear from ministers early. It is also an opportunity for Canadians to see the Senate in action on such an important bill."
Marijuana is expected to be legalised by the government from July, 2018.
Apart from legalising, the federal government has also decided to make an age of majority to use recreational marijuana and also to decide on the retail network of stores where the marijuana could be sold.
However, youth in possession of cannabis will not be criminalised from henceforth.
But any car driver or passenger will not be allowed to consume cannabis.
