Canada imposes temporary border restrictions over Ebola outbreak concerns

The measures, announced by the Public Health Agency of Canada, are aimed at reducing the risk of Ebola entering and spreading within Canada.

Beginning May 27, Canada intends to suspend temporary resident visas, electronic travel authorisations and permanent resident visas for residents of the three countries for 90 days.

The government also plans to temporarily pause processing applications for such immigration documents from residents of those countries.

Under additional measures taking effect from May 30 through August 29, Canadian citizens, permanent residents and foreign nationals who have been in the affected areas within the previous 21 days and do not show symptoms will be required to quarantine for 21 days under the Quarantine Act.

Travellers showing symptoms will be isolated in hospital for further assessment, the government said.

According to a statement, the measures were precautionary and cited the severity of Ebola, the evolving international situation and increased global travel linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The government said there have been no Ebola cases imported into Canada and no confirmed cases currently in North America.

Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab said the planned measures were necessary to “reinforce the integrity of our border against this threat to public health.”

Canadian citizens and permanent residents will still be allowed to return to Canada but will undergo screening at ports of entry.
