Britons, Spaniards rally against Brexit in Madrid

Madrid, Mar 24 (Sputnik/UNI) A hundred Spaniards and British expatriates staged an anti-Brexit rally on Saturday in the square in Madrid named after late UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

The protest against the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union and in favor of a new referendum was organized by EuroCitizens, a grassroots campaign defending the rights of UK nationals in Spain.

The demonstrators held up posters that read “For Our Rights, For Our Future,” “Can’t Live Without EU” and “We Are the People Too, Give US a Vote” in English and Spanish.

EuroCitizens Vice Chair Camilla Hillier-Fry told Sputnik they would do everything in their power to make 5 million people heard, including 1.2 million Britons in EU countries and over 3 million EU citizens in the United Kingdom.

She said the Spanish government was taking steps to guarantee the rights of 314,000 registered British residents in Spain but stressed the UK authorities needed to meet Madrid halfway.
