British Parliament to probe if Boris Johnson lied over attending party during Covid lockdown

London/IBNS: British lawmakers on Thursday initiated a probe into allegations that Prime Minister Boris Johnson had misled the Parliament with his initial response to the charges that he and his staff broke COVID-19 lockdown rules by attending a party.

Lawmakers approved a motion calling for a parliamentary committee to ascertain if Johnson's denials of rule-breaking amounted to a contempt of the House of Commons in light of his subsequent police fine for breaching regulations, said reports.

The motion was passed without any opposition.

Johnson, who is currently on a two-day visit to India, had earlier apologized for attending a Downing Street garden party in London during the country's first lockdown in 2020.

During a weekly session of Prime Minister's Questions at the House of Commons (lower house of the British Parliament), Johnson had admitted that he attended the gathering in the back garden of 10 Downing Street on May 20, 2020.

"I believed implicitly that this was a work event," he had told the lawmakers, adding that he went to the garden party with the aim of thanking groups of staff before going back into his office 25 minutes later.

The prime minister had conceded: "With hindsight, I should have sent everyone back inside. I should have found some other way to thank them."

He had also paid a fine for breaking COVID-19 lockdown rules.
