BBC Chairman Richard Sharp resigns over involvement in facilitating loan to ex-UK PM Boris Johnson

London: BBC chairman Richard Sharp on Friday resigned after a probe revealed he had violated rules for failing to disclose his connection in making a loan available for then prime minister Boris Johnson, AFP reported.

"I feel that this matter may well be a distraction from the Corporation's good work were I to remain in post until the end of my term," said Sharp, according to the news agency.

Sharp was earlier a boss of UK PM Rishi Sunak at Goldman Sachs.

Earlier this year, Richard Sharp was entangled in a controversy related to cronyism, in which he was accused of assisting Boris Johnson in securing a loan facility worth £800,000.

Sam Blyth, a Canadian businessman and a friend of Richard Sharp, approached him with an offer to assist Boris Johnson, who was facing financial difficulties as the Prime Minister in 2020.
