Bangladesh court gives death sentence to two, lifer to three in Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee murder case

Dhaka, May 8 (IBNS): A Bangladesh court on Tuesday awarded death sentence to two people in connection with the murder of Rajshahi University Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee.

The two people awarded death sentence by the court are militants belonging to banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

The court also awarded life sentence to three others in the case.

Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Shirin Kabita Akhter handed death penalty to Rajshahi University’s English department student Shariful Islam, a fugitive, and Polytechnic Institute student Maskawath Hasan Sakib alias Abdullah, reported The Daily Star.

"Other accused, the university’s crop science department student Rahmatullah, Abdus Sattar and Sattar's son Ripon were handed down life imprisonment," reported the Bangladesh-based newspaper.

Rezaul was a teacher in the English Department of the university.

He was hacked to death in 2016 in  Shalbagan area of Rajshahi.
