Awami League supporters raise slogans against Yunus, demand his resignation during Modi's visit to US

A group of Awami League supporters joined to raise slogans against Bangladesh interim government chief Muhammad Yunus outside the Blair House in Washington on Thursday.

They protested outside the venue at a time when Indian PM Narendra Modi, who was recently visiting the USA, was staying in the iconic building in the capital city.

The protesters reportedly demanded Yunus' resignation.

Slogans of “Minority killer” “Hindu killer Younus” were also raised, reported ANI.

One of the protestors told the news agency, “Dr Younus is an illegal and illegitimate person to take over power with the help of terrorists. According to our Constitution, Sheikh Hasina is still the PM of Bangladesh. They removed her (from her post) with the help of terrorists. But next time, we want elections. People will elect Sheikh Hasina again.”

Another protester said: "We have come to support Bangladesh. We want justice. What is happening in Bangladesh, people are being killed and there is no security there. It’s very bad in Bangladesh right now."

What happened last year?

Former PM Sheikh Hasina was ousted from Bangladesh amid severe protests against her regime over a job quota row.

Following the toppling of her Awami League-led government, Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus returned to Bangladesh and took charge of an interim government.

Since Hasina's ouster, Bangladesh has witnessed continuous attacks on Hindu community members and clashes between Awami League and Yunus supporters.

Bangabandhu's residence set on fire

Thousands of protesters set the family residence of Bangladesh's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on fire, triggering tension in the country recently.

Hasina and several members of her former government are facing numerous charges for offences, including crime against humanity, for launching a crackdown on protesters during the July-August uprising.
