At least two killed as quake strikes Indonesia

Jakarta, Dec 16 (IBNS): At least two people were reported dead after a strong earthquake struck Indonesia late Friday, reports said.

The tremors were measured at magnitude 6.5 and was centered in Cipatujah, the western side of Java, a US Geological Survey report said.

The impact was so strong that resident living almost 300 kilometres away, in the capital Jakarta, felt it too.

According to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia's National Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency, a tsunami alert was issued after the quake.
It was recorded by local authorities at 11:47 p.m. as 6.9 magnitude.

However, at 2:30 am, the alert was lifted.

The deceased have not been identified as of yet.

Local residents have reported several aftershocks.
