Afghanistan: Gunmen kill activist and FEFA CEO Yousuf Rasheed in Kabul

Kabul: An attack by unknown gunmen left the CEO of the Free and Fair Election Forum of Afghanistan (FEFA) dead on Wednesday morning, local media reports said.

Yousuf Rasheed was gunned down by assailants along with his driver around 8:30am local time in the Tani Koot area in PD7 of Kabul city while he was on his way to the office.

The report was confirmed by Abdul Baqi Rasheed, his brother.

No group, including the Taliban, has claimed responsibility for carrying out the attack, so far.

Meanwhile, Rasheed's death was mourned by the US Chargé d’Affaires Ross Wilson, who said the deceased was a "dedicated and steadfast advocate for representative democracy in Afghanistan."

"He worked tirelessly for years to ensure free and transparent elections that engaged all Afghans. His death is a loss for his family, friends and nation," Wilson said.

"The United States condemns his assassination. He advanced an inclusive form of government for this country over the last 14 years. I am appalled by his murder, another in a cacophony of senseless and endless violence," Wilson added.

Former Afghan Acting Foreign Minister and Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, Idrees Zaman tweeted, "Murder of #YousufRasheed shocked all of us. His brutal and barbaric murder was certainly not a befitting end to the life of such a remarkable personality. Mr. Rasheed contributed significantly to our democratic processes. My condolences to his family and colleagues @N_Nadery"
