100 mine workers trapped in South Africa

Johannesburg , Feb 5 (IBNS): Above 100 people were trapped inside a gold mine in South Africa's Mpumalanga province on Friday, media reports said.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) are trapped underground in the mine.

"Another tragedy has befallen our members. Approximately 115 of our members are trapped underground after the main offi ces at Makonjwaan Gold Mine in Barberton situated in Mpumalanga province, tragically caved in at 08.40AM this morning," read a statement issued by the AMCU.

"At this point it’s unclear what caused the disaster but further information on this horrific incident will be made available during the course of the day," it said.

"This is the second horrific incident within the past 2 weeks, which is uncomprehendable and we are very saddened and disturbed to hear of such a horrendous incidence that has again hit our members," read the statement.
