A senior tourism department official has said Tripura's Unakoti, which is known for its Shaivite rock’ sculptures, will soon have a cafeteria, toilets, drinking water and other facilities for travellers.

Unakoti was earlier shortlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“During a recent meeting, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury requested the ASI to set up a cafetoria at Unakoti to cater to the needs of the tourists and pilgrims,” Director of Tourism Tapan Kumar Das told PTI news agency as quoted by East Mojo.

As per the official website of Tripura Tourism Department, Unakoti dates back to 7th – 9th centuries.

Myth associated with Unakoti
.
As per Hindu mythology, when Lord Shiva was going to Kashi along with one crore gods and goddesses he made a night halt at this location.

He asked all the gods and goddesses to wake up before the sun rise and proceed for Kashi.

It is said that in the morning, except Shiva himself, no one else could get up so Lord Shiva set out for Kashi himself cursing the others to become stone images.

As a result, we have one less than a crore of stone images and carvings at Unakoti.

These carvings are located in a beautifully landscaped forest area with green vegetation all around which add to the beauty of the carvings, read the tourism department website.

The images found at Unakoti are of two types, namely rock-carved figures and stone images.
