Akron, June 28 (IBNS): In a shocking announcement, World No.1 golfer Jason Day of Australia on Tuesday said he is pulling out his name from the upcoming Rio Olympic Games due to threat of Zika virus.

In a statement, the golfer said: "It is with deep regret I announce that I will not be competing in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games this coming August in Rio de Janeiro."

Stating the reason behind  taking the decision, he said: "The reason for my decision is my concerns about the possible transmission of the Zika virus and the potential risks that it may present to my wife’s future pregnancies and to future members of our family."

The  major international multi-sport event of the year is due to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from Aug 5 to 21.
