Nagpur, Mar 25 (IBNS) Chasing 123 runs to win the match and occupy a berth in the semi finals of the World T20, West Indies came out on top and defeated South Africa by 3 wickets in a closely contested match here on Friday.

Earlier, West Indies captain Darren Sammy won the coin toss and decided to bowl first and restricted the Proteas to 122 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.

The West Indian batsmen made heavy of a smooth chase after a mini collapse triggered chaos but eventually scored the required runs with two balls to spare.

Reeling at 34 for the loss of 2 wickets, after ace Caribbean batsman Chris Gayle (4) was sent back to the hut by Kagiso Rabada and a brilliant run out by Riley Rossouw cut short Andre Fletcher's (11) innings, Johnson Charles and Marlon Samuels stitched together a partnership of 32 runs for the 3rd wicket.

While Charles scored 32 runs off 35 balls, Samuels, who bagged the player of the match award, top scored with 44, playing identical deliveries. His innings comprised of 6 boundaries and was instrumental in bailing out his team. He also raced past 1000 T20I runs along with Dwayne Bravo (8) during the match

Imran Tahir emerged as the best bowler for his side, picking up 2 wickets and was on a hat trick. Rabada, Wiese, Morris and Phangiso picked up a wicket each.

South Africa scored their runs on the back of Quinton de Kock's knock. The southpaw scored 47 runs off 46 balls with the help of 3 fours and a six.

The others barring David Wiese (28) and Chris Morris (16 not out), failed to put runs on the board.

Andre Russel, Dwayne Bravo and Chris Gayle picked up a brace each.
