Williamson Magor dominate day 1 of The Telegraph Merchant's and Challenge Cup 2015
Defending champions Williamson Magor ‘A’ lived up to their top billing with the help of Jayanta Gohain’s 74.
Ishan Bajoria of McLeod & Co. matched him to be tied at the top of Division I followed by Oil India ‘A’ helped into third place by Abhijit Konwar’s 77.
Vijay Rawal came in with the day’s best net score of 62.
In Division II was Jakir Hussain from Amalgamated Plantation who shot a round of 81 to grab the lead. Deepak Mehata of Williamson Magor ‘C’ is placed second one stroke behind while McLeod Russel ‘D’ are placed third a further three strokes behind. The day’s best net score was carded by Pallab Borgohain of OIL India ‘B’.
Williamson Magor ‘D’ enjoy a five stroke lead at the top of Division III pushed by NK Devaya’s 83 who also scored the best net of 67. Kevyn David with an 88 helped Williamson Magor ‘B’ into second place, a stroke ahead of Andrew Yule represented by RK Babaycon.
In the Challenge Cup played concurrently, South India projects lead the way thanks to Amrish Khaitan who netted a 70 for the day’s best card. One stroke behind is Vyana Wealth Management with the help of Arungata Das. AM Luthra’s 72 placed GI Security in third place while TV Ramaswamy carded a net of 73 to place ITC Ltd. in the fourth place.
Under pleasant conditions, Sanjay Choudhary of J Thomas & Co. ‘A’ clocked the Ballantine’s Longest Drive and it was the familiar Jayanta Gohain of Williamson Magor ‘A’ was closest to the pin on the day.
The world’s oldest intercompany event, which first began in 1906, is presented by Ballantine’s. Standard Chartered is the banking partner with Amazing Thailand on board as a co-sponsor. Partnering the event are Voltas, 91.9 Friends FM along with Coca Cola and Kingfisher.
The format of play is rather gripping and exciting. The Merchant’s Cup shall be played on open stroke play and the Challenge Cup will be played on Callaway scoring system. The week-long prestigious event is managed by leading event management company Tiger Sports Marketing.
