WI thrash India by 124 runs

Kochi, Oct 8 (IBNS): Riding on Marlon Samuels unbeaten 126 and strong performance by the bowlers, West Indies commenced their trip to India on a winning note by beating the home side by 124 runs in the first match of the ODI series here on Wednesday.

Posting 321 for six on, West Indies bowlers bowled out India for 197 with 54 balls to spare.

West Indies batsmen started on a confident note with the openers Dwayne Smith (46) and Dwayne Bravo (17) added 34 runs quickly.

Bravo departed in the eighth over to be joined by Darren Bravo (28) as he added 64 runs in the second wicket partnership as the scorecard rolled on to 98 within 17.1 overs.

India succeed in breaking the partnership with Ravindra Jadeja taking the wicket of Smith.

Leg -spinner Amit Mishra soon got rid off Bravo which left Indians on a stronger ground to recover in the match.

Samuels came to the crease and looked to dominate the Indian bowlers.

Along with

Denesh Ramdin (61), Samuels added 165 runs in the fourth wicket partnership to drive the match away from India.

Samuels hit 11 boundaries and four sixes in his knock and remained not out till the end.

Mohammed Shami picked up four wickets by giving away 66 runs.

Ravindra Jadeja and Mishra took a wicket each.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled an economical spell where he gave away only 38 runs in his 10 overs. He failed to pick up a wicket.

The Indian innings in return saw its openers Ajinkya Rahane (24) and Shikhar Dhawan (68) added 49 runs in the opening wicket stand.

The rest of the line-up simply collapsed on Wednesday with only Ravindra Jadeja contributing unbeaten 33 with his willow.

Ravi Rampaul, Dwayne Bravo and Samuels picked up two wickets each.

With the World Cup less than a year left, Indian team received a jolt in the first match of this tournament itself with West Indies going 1-0 up in the series.
