Tokyo: Indian eves created history on Monday morning as they defeated Australia in the women's hockey quarter-final clash of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics here.

India beat and knocked out Australia 1-0.

Gurjit Kaur scored the only goal for India to give the side an early lead.

Indian defence remained strong and prevented the mighty Australians from scoring the equaliser.

This will be the first time the Indian women's team will play the Olympics semi-finals.

The eves in 1980 had finished fourth in the Moscow Olympics.

However, the format was different at that time and there was not knockout round in that edition of the mega sporting event.

India will now face the mighty Argentina in the semi-finals.

India will get an oppurtunity to play a medal round for the first time in Olympics after assuring a place in the last-four stage of the tournament.
