Tennis: Sania loses numero uno spot to Bethanie Mattek-Sands

St. Petersburg, Florida, Jan 8 (IBNS): Indian tennis sensation and former women's doubles number one ranked player, Sania Mirza has slipped down to the second spot while her partner Bethanie Matter-Sands, with whom she won the Brisbane International on Saturday, replaced her at the top.

Reacting to the news, Mattek-Sands was quoted as saying by the WTA website, "It took me by surprise. I mean, I'm the kind of person to lose track of score during matches! And so I think it just kind of hit me when I actually kind of got announced as being No.1."

It's in the back of your mind, but I didn't want to think about it too much during the tournament, and so I think it all just kind of hit me there at the end," she said.

"But I'm really excited about it. It's something that no one can take away from you," Matter-Sands added.

Sania and Mattek-Sands lifted the first women's doubles trophy of 2017.

The Indo-American pair clinched the Brisbane International title by beating Russian team of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the tournament.

Sania remained at the top of the doubles chart for a consecutive 91 weeks.
