Tax fraud: Football star Lionel Messi handed jail term

Barcelona, July 6 (IBNS): Argentina's football star Lionel Messi and his father Jorge Messi were sentenced to a prison term by a Spanish court in connection with tax fraud committed between 2007 and 2009.

Messi has been sentenced to  21 months in prison.

"His father, Jorge Messi, was also given a jail term for defrauding Spain of €4.1m (£3.5m; $4.5m) between 2007 and 2009," BBC reported.

They also face millions of euros in fines for using tax havens in Belize and Uruguay to conceal earnings from image rights, the report said.

Messi recently announced his retirement from international football.

He plays for Barcelona club.
