Second Test: Gill, Rahane guide India to 8 wickets victory against Australia, level series 1-1
Melbourne: Riding on Shubman Gill's steady knock, India defeated Australia by eight wickets to win the second Test match to level the series 1-1 here on Tuesday.
After bowling out Australia for 200 runs, India needed 70 runs for victory.
However, India started their second innings with two quick jolts as the visitors lost the wickets of Mayank Agarwal (5) and Cheteshwar Pujara (3).
Gill remained 35 not out and skipper Ajinkya Rahane added 27 runs as they guided India to victory without any further troubles.
Rahane's leadership abilities have been appreciated by fans and ex-cricketers as he guided India to victory in the second Test after disappointing show in the opening match.
India were bowled out for 36 runs in the second innings of the Pink Ball Test which forced the visitors to suffer a massive defeat.
Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins picked up a wicket each for the hosts.
India wrapped up Australia's second innings for 200 in the opening session of the fourth day of the second Test to the MCG, here on Tuesday.
Australia lost their last 4 wickets in the extended first session on Tuesday, managing to add just 67 runs to their overnight score of 133 for 6.
India had taken a 131-run lead on the third day as hosts scored 326 in reply to Australia's first innings total of 195. India now need 70 runs to win the Test and level the four-match series.
Cameron Green (45) and Matthew Wade (40) were the top-scorer for the hosts.
For India, debutant pacer Mohammed Siraj (3/37) took three wickets while Jasprit Bumrah (2/54) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/28) and Ravichandran Ashwin (2/71) took two wickets apiece.
