Kolkata/UNI: Merlin Group, a Kolkata-based real estate group, plans to invest Rs 2,000 crore in a sports-themed township in the Rajarhat-Bishnupur area called the 'RISE-Sports Republic'.

RISE Premier League (RPL), a corporate football league, is the kick-off to Merlin's upcoming township.

Actress Raima Sen also graced the occasion and unveiled the logo and the jersey of RPL along with Saket Mohta, Managing Director, Merlin Group, and veteran footballers such as Manas Bhattacharya and Biswajit Bhattacharya.

The two-day football league will witness 16 teams participating from corporates such as TCS, Genpact, Wipro, Cognizant, and the Merlin Group facing each other.

The event will be followed by two exhibition matches at the Rajarhat Choumatha area on Oct 23 and Oct 24.

The sports township will be developed to provide an international standard sporting infrastructure in Kolkata, a senior company official said.

Saket Mohta said: “Kolkata has always been the home-ground of various sports with football being the most popular sport in Bengal. But there is a dearth of adequate sports infrastructure in the city that can identify and train budding talents. We as responsible corporate citizens of Kolkata felt the urge to contribute to the sports glory and heritage of the city.

"The biggest challenge faced by most of the renowned clubs as well as football academies of the city is the infrastructure. Lack of proper facilities has always concerned me as an ardent sports enthusiast. Our upcoming self-sufficient sports-themed township “RISE-Sports Republic” is aimed at fulfilling that vision of Merlin Group."
