Ranchi: US Consulate Kolkata, Middlebury College organise third edition of East India Women’s Hockey and Leadership camp
Ranchi: The U.S. Consulate Kolkata, in partnership with Middlebury College in the U.S.A., organized the third edition of the East India Women’s Hockey and Leadership Camp in east Indian city of Ranchi from November 26 to December 2, 2023, at the SERSA Astro Turf Hockey Stadium.
Twelve American coaches from Middlebury College trained the participants extensively.
The camp garnered support of the Crime Investigation Department-Jharkhand Police, police departments of the districts of Ranchi, Gumla, Simdega, Khunti and Chaibasa, Southeastern Railways, and Jharkhand State Khadi and Village Industries Board.

As many as 105 tribal girls, who are aged between 14-16 years, living in areas in Jharkhand vulnerable to human trafficking and child marriage, such as Gumla, Simdega, Khunti and Chaibasa, participated in the Hockey Training Camp that aimed to harness leadership skills among adolescent girls through on-field sports sessions, educate them on social issues, strengthen the anti-trafficking prevention nets with the collaboration of police and district administration.
The six-day hockey training camp witnessed knowledge-sharing sessions in the evenings from Anti-Trafficking in Person experts, senior officials from the Jharkhand Police, and members of the legislative assembly.
The sessions aimed to empower and educate the adolescent girls participating in the program on issues of child sexual abuse, human trafficking, and child marriages, and to empower the girls along with community leaders to combat gender-based violence.
Katharine DeLorenzo, Head Coach, Middlebury College, USA and Director of East India Hockey Project said, “The East India Hockey Project offers a week of hockey and leadership training, paired with education on key regional social issues faced by young women."

"The program provides each girl the time and space to grow, perform and share in a safe, exciting and joyful setting," the coach said.
"The development of each young woman between Day 1 and Day 6 has been truly remarkable," Katharine DeLorenzo said.
"As the week went on, every single one of them demonstrated the innate strength and charisma they hold within. It is our hope that they carry this confidence with them and empower their peers back in their villages in the months and years to come," she said.
