Osaka beats Serena Williams in controversial US Open final to life title
New York, Sept 9 (IBNS): Controversies hit the final of the US Open where Japanese player Naomi Osaka defeated Serena Williams of the US to clinch her first Grand Slam title here.
Osaka created history as she defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-4 in 1 hour and 19 mins in Flushing Meadows, New York.
"I think maybe in a few days I'll realize what I've done. Right now it just feels, like, I don't know. Aside from the fact there's a lot of press in this room, it feels just like another tournament," the Japanese was quoted as saying by the WTA website.
The final witnessed a controversial moment when Serena was penalised for outburst and racket abuse as she accuses umpire of sexism.
During the first set, Serena was seen clashing with the chair umpire Carlos Ramos after she was given a warning for receiving coaching.
The US star even received a second warning and a point penalty for breaking her racket.
"You owe me an apology," she was quoted as saying during the match while the player was arguing over coaching violations.
Serena said she never chated in her life.
“I've seen other men call other umpires several things... For me to say 'thief' and for him to take a game, it made me feel like it was a sexist remark. He's never taken a game from a man because they said 'thief',” Serena was quoted as saying by WTA website.
“It blows my mind, but I'm going to continue to fight for women and to fight for us to have equal - like Cornet should be able to take off her shirt without getting a fine. This is outrageous," she said.
