McLeod Russel Golf Championship to witness strongest filed of Indian Golfers

Kolkata, Dec 12 (IBNS): Most of the top Indian golfers including former champion S S PChowrsia, Jeev Milkha singh,Arjun Atwal,, Gagnjeet Bhullar, Shiv Kapur , Jyoti Randjhawa and Rahil Gangji along with Paria Junhasvasdikul, and Suradit Yongcharoenchai from Thailand,Mithun Periera from Sri Lanka and Shintaro Konayashi from Japan will stake their claim for the top honours at the McLeod Russel Tour championship 2016, the PGTI ‘s year ending tour championship to be held at RoyalCalcutta Golf Club during Dec 22 to 25.

The other top Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri will not be available  to play here as he is now busy playing in United States.

The tournament,  one of the strongest field of  professional golf,  offers a handsome purse of  rupees one point five crore, the highest for a domestic tournament in India  with winner and runner up bagging rupees twenty two lacs fifty thousand and rupees fifteen lacs respectively.

The tournament will be a 72 –hole  stroke play  championship where there will be no cut after 36 holes and all participants are guaranteed to earn a prize money.

Speaking on the occasion Rajiv Takru of  McLeod Russel said the championship would  provide a fine opportunity to local golfers  to  watch and learn from  the top professionals from India and Asia.

This meet would also give a big boost to the gold in region,he felt.

Director of the Professional Golf Tour of India ( PGTI)  Uttam Singh Mundy  said this championship will make for  an exiting week of golf as the race for the Rolex Player of th Year title is too close to call with many contenders in frey.

Asked about PGTI’s plan to prepare Indian team  as the event has been included in the 2020 TokyoOlympics , Mundy informed   for Olympics ,players have to earn international points. PGTI is working towards that,Mundy said.
