New Delhi, Dec 4 (IBNS): Angelo Mathews and captain Dinesh Chandimal on Monday scored brilliant hundreds on the third day of the final Test match against India to give Sri Lanka a position from where the visitors can fight at Feroz Shah Kotla.

Riding on the hundreds by Mathews and Chandimal, Sri Lanka posted 356/9 at stumps, still trailing India by 180 runs.

Though the Indian bowlers came out in an aggressive mood against two overnight Sri Lankan batsmen, Mathews and Chandimal, Sri Lanka successfully survived the first session without losing a wicket.

Both the batsmen scored hundreds to put Sri Lanka in a better position but it was Mathews who was dismissed by Ashwin as the first wicket of the day.

Mathews and Chandimal have together put up 181 for the fourth wicket.

After Mathews' dismissal, Chandimal partnered Sadeera Samarawickrama to reduce the lead taken by the Indians but it was Ishant's delivery that clinched Samarawickrama's wicket.

Though the Sri Lankan captain did not lose focus but failed to receive any further support from the other side.

Chandimal remained not out at 147 runs from 341 balls at stumps. The 147 runs innings by Chandimal consisted of 18 fours and a six.

Lakshan Sandakan, the last Sri Lankan batsman, is at the crease without scoring.

India declared their first innings at 536/7 on Sunday.

Indian captain Virat Kohli slammed his sixth double hundred and scored a mesmerising knock of 243 against the visitors.

India lead the three-match Test series 1-0.
