London, May 18 (IBNS): Russian Tennis star Maria Sharapova on Monday moved to the number two spot in the WTA world rankings after she clinched the Rome Masters on Sunday.

Serena Williams maintained the top spot with 9361 points .

Sharapova, who stood in the second spot with 7710 points, defeated  Carla Suarez Navarro and won the milestone 35th WTA title of her career at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia.

In the doubles category, Indian Tennis star Sania Mirza remained the number one player in the world with 7940 points.

Her doubles partner and Swiss Tennis legend Martina Hingis stood in the second spot with 6955 points.
