Ecuador erupted in celebration after the national football team produced one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup 2026, coming from behind to defeat Germany 2-1 and book a place in the Round of 32.

The famous victory sparked jubilant scenes across the South American nation as fans took to the streets to celebrate Ecuador's progression to the knockout stage as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.

President declares national holiday

Joining the nationwide celebrations, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced a public holiday on Friday to mark the historic achievement.

In a post on X, Noboa praised the team's resilience despite facing criticism throughout their campaign.

"Thanks to the players and the coach who, despite the criticism, the insults, and the tough times they went through, managed to bounce back and bring this immense joy to the entire country.

Tomorrow, holiday! Long live Ecuador."

Historic World Cup triumph

Ecuador sealed a memorable 2-1 victory over Germany in their final Group E match after recovering from an early setback.

Leroy Sané gave Germany the lead in the second minute before Nilson Angulo equalised seven minutes later.

With the match heading towards a draw, Gonzalo Plata scored the decisive goal in the 77th minute following a goalkeeping error by Manuel Neuer, handing Ecuador a famous victory.

Despite the defeat, Germany finished atop Group E, while Ecuador advanced to the Round of 32 with four points as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.
