Lasith Malinga retires from ODI cricket, Sachin, Rohit Sharma congratulate

Colombo, July 27 (IBNS): Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga on Friday retired from ODI cricket after his Sri Lankan team clinched a victory against Bangladesh in the 1st ODI in Colombo on Friday.  

In his final match, Malinga picked up three wickets.

Malinga also represented Sri Lanka in the 2019 World Cup where the Islanders failed to reach the last-four stage of the tournament.

In his glorious career, Malinga, who is considered as one of the top cricketers to play the game, stepped into the ground to perform in  30 Tests in which he picked up 101 wickets at an average of 33.16.

He played 226 ODI matches for Sri Lanka.

He took 338 wickets.

In the 20 over format, he played 73 T20Is in which he recorded 97 wickets.

International cricketers congratulated Malinga for his glorious career.

"Congratulations on a wonderful One Day career, #Malinga. Wishing you all the very best for the future," ex-Indian cricketer and iconic batsman Sachin Tendulkar tweeted.

Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma said: "If I had to pick one match winner among many others for @mipaltan  in the last decade, this man will be on the top for sure. As a captain he give me breather during tense situation and he never failed to deliver, such was his presence within the team. Best wishes LM for the future."

Cricket World Cup said: "Lasith Malinga, king of the yorker, bids farewell to ODI cricket What's your favourite World Cup performance of his?."

Sri Lanka Cricket said: " Lasith Malinga ends his ODI career with 338 wickets, as the 9th highest wicket-taker in the format; third highest for Sri Lanka! #ThankYouMalinga #LEGEND."
