Kolkata on the brink of hosting Brazil in blockbuster international friendly: Reports

The excitement of the FIFA World Cup may be over, but football fans in India could soon have another major spectacle to look forward to, with Brazil reportedly set to visit Kolkata for an international friendly in October.

Kolkata, long regarded as the heartland of Indian football, is home to one of Brazil's largest and most passionate fan bases outside the South American nation, making it a fitting venue for the five-time world champions.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is reportedly negotiating a third international fixture in India during the first week of October, in addition to Brazil's already scheduled friendlies against Australia on September 25 in Townsville and September 29 in Brisbane, The Telegraph reported, citing ESPN Brasil.

The identity of Brazil's opponent, however, has yet to be finalised.

According to media reports, discussions between the CBF and local organisers began during the recently concluded FIFA World Cup in the United States.

The proposed fixture is expected to take place during FIFA's new "Super FIFA window"—an international period of up to 16 days that allows national teams to play as many as four matches, including both competitive fixtures and friendlies.

Kolkata boasts a rich footballing tradition and has hosted several global stars over the decades. One of the city's most iconic football moments came in 1977, when Brazilian legend Pelé turned out for New York Cosmos in a historic exhibition match against Mohun Bagan at Eden Gardens.

Brazil's campaign at this year's FIFA World Cup ended in disappointment after the Seleção suffered a Round of 16 defeat to Norway, marking the country's earliest exit from the tournament since 1990.
