India under Kohli will rewrite history, It was right time that I quit : MS Dhoni
Dhoni, while addressing his first press conference after stepping down as skipper of the Indian team in ODI and T20 formats, said he was waiting for the right time to quit and did it when Kohli came to the position of taking the responsibility.
“This team has the potential and then the experience to win in all formats..."If it is number, Virat's team will win more games in all formats than mine. I feel this will be the most successful Indian team ever," he said.
Dhoni was in India's new jersey as he addressed the media.
'Mahi' was all praise for the present Indian team that he left under the wings of Kohli, saying they all have played under pressure and different pitches to prove themselves.
"We have got pacers who can bowl in any conditions. Even if one is injured there is always someone capable of replacing him.”
Speaking about captaincy, Dhoni said he had decided to call it quits as captain after the last South Africa series in India.
"To cut a long story short, in my mind, my last series was at home versus South Africa, after which I told BCCI I won't captain India any more. I believe one player should lead in all three formats."
"I was waiting for the right time; for Virat to ease into the role, now he has. I felt it was the right time to move on,” he said.
Dhoni, who led the country in 199 one day matches and 72 72 T20 ties, said, One more game would not have made a big difference.”
Dhoni, who earlier had to give up test captaincy to Kohli, said he remaining skipper in the two other formats would not have benefited the country.
"In our scenario, split captaincy doesn't work. it was always in mind when Kohli took over the Test captaincy. I wanted him to have some time and then I decided it was time to move on and give Kohli the full captaincy."
Dhoni said he had no regrets as skipper and how the juniors in the team carried it forward.
"I don't regret anything in life. Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I went through good periods and I went through tough periods."
"Once the seniors left and the juniors came in the side, the same juniors continued.
"It's a journey I really enjoyed."
