England struggle after India pile 587 riding on Gill's record-breaking double ton
Birmingham/IBNS: England landed themselves in trouble at stumps on day two after India scored a mammoth total of 587 in the first innings of second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Thursday.
At the close of the day's play, England scored 77 losing three wickets facing Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj, who have so far managed to overshadow premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah's absence.
While Deep removed Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope in two consecutive balls for ducks, Siraj dismissed Zak Crawley (19) in the eighth over reducing the hosts to 25-3.
Harry Brook (30) and Joe Root (18) will resume the third day's play on Friday.
Earlier in the day, India captain Shubman Gill hit his career-best 269 off 387 balls (30 fours and three sixes) leaving the hosts toil for wickets for more than two sessions.
Gill's 269 has shattered multiple records. The India captain became the highest scorer in an innings on the English soil. Previously, the record was held by Sunil Gavaskar (221).
Gill's score is the highest by any Indian captain as he surpassed Virat Kohli's previous record of 254 against South Africa in Pune in 2019.
Moreover, his score in the second Test against England is the highest by any Indian in Tests outside Asia.
Jadeja, the overnight batter, finished at 89 off 137 balls when he was surprised by an extra bounce off Josh Tongue's delivery and caught behind by Jamie Smith.
After a massive 203-partnership with Jadeja, Gill was joined by Washington Sundar, who slammed crucial 42 off 103 balls to facilitate both the captain to extend his big double hundred and give India a chance to control the game.
"We just looked to play our normal cricket and back our strength. When myself and Shubman were playing, we were just looking to build a big partnership and everything fell in place," said Jadeja on his partnership with Gill.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who slammed a hundred in Headingley, missed his second consecutive century in Edgbaston on day one as he was caught behind wicket off England captain Ben Stokes for 87 off 107 balls.
Karun Nair, who was promoted to number three in absence of Sai Sudharsan, went back to the hut scoring 31.
On Wednesday, Gill announced three changes to their side from the last match.
Nitish Reddy, Washington Sundar and Akash Deep have been inducted to the team. The team management dropped Sai Sudharsan, Shardul Thakur and rested Bumrah.
Gill said Bumrah was rested to manage his workload.
