England defeat India by 31 runs in first Test, Virat Kohli's 51 goes in vain

Birmingham, Aug 4 (IBNS): India suffered a heartbreaking defeat in Birmingham as England defeated the visitors by 31 runs in the first Test match here on Saturday.

Chasing 194 for victory, India were bowled out for 162 runs in their second innings.

Skipper Virat Kohli (51) and Hardik Pandya (31) tried desperately but it was Egland who scripted the victory to clinch 1-0 lead in the series.

Kohli hammered four boundaries in his knock but it was Stokes (4-40) who removed the Indian skipper to put things back to England court.

Hardik's late attempt in stitching a victory for the visitors failed miserably as he lacked a proper partner at the other end of the crease.

India resumed the proceedings at 110 runs for the loss of five wickets with Dinesh Karthik (20) and Kohli fighting to score 84 runs needed for victory.

Experienced James Anderson (2-50) gave India early blows in the morning by dismissing Karthik.

Despite a close fight, India kept losing wickets at regular intervals to make situations worse for them.

England will take on India in the second test from Aug 9.
