Day one of fourth test : England 288/5, Ashwin claims four

Mumbai, Dec 8 (IBNS) : Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's late burst helped India to restrict England to 288 for 5 as the visitors lost three quick wickets by the end of the first day of the fourth test match after a patient century by debutant Keaton Jennings and his two solid partnerships with fellow opener Alastair Cook and Moeen Ali put the team on a good foundation.

Ben stokes (25) and Joe Butler (18)  were at the crease when the stumps were drawn.

Ashwin, who picked up four of the five wickets, claimed the  scalps with Ali and Jennings in two successive balls of the 71st over before Johnny Bairstow was out.

Ashwin also took the prize wicket of  Joe Root.

Jennings, who hit a century on first appearance, scored 112 off 249 runs displaying his skill and application of mind.

He had a   99-run partnership with  skipper Cook (46) and the 94-run stand with  Moeen Ali (50) in the third wicket.

Earlier in the day, English skipper Cook won the coin-toss and elected to bat first, adding 99 runs along with Jennings before the former departed for 46.

Cook was stumped by Parthiv Patel off Jadeja.

Root hit a boundary in his 41-ball stay at the crease and was later picked up by Ravichandran Ashwin.

Apart from the three scalps, it has all been England's day as their batsmen have feasted on a surface ideal for stroke making.

Ali (50) departed just after reaching his half-century, falling prey to Ashwin, and his partner too succumbed in the same over.
