Bridge Championship: Former Asian Games gold medallists lead Deepadhar to top spot on opening day

Kolkata/IBNS: Displaying fine acumen, Deepadhar represented by Badal Das, Joyrup Mullick, Prosenjit Manna, and former Asian Games Gold Medalists Pranab Bardhan and Sibnath (Kachchu) De Sarkar led the field in the team event with 65.22 Victory Points (VPs) at the end of the fourth round  on the inaugural day of the 5th Balrampur Chini  East Zone Bridge Championship at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre  in New Town here Friday.

With four more league rounds to go, Deepadhar is now followed by Tornate (62.80 VPs), Challengers (58.87 VPs), Dr. Ram Niranjan Jhunjhunwala (58.46 VPs), Alok's IV (55.12), Zenith (54.62 VPs), One Night Slam (51.83 VPs), Conquerors (50.95 VPs), We The Four (50.65 VPs), Ekdalia (50.62 VPs) and others.

Formidables, one of the noted teams in the country, which include Sagnik Roy and Sayantan Kushari - who have recently won the gold  in the under 31 Transnational World Bridge Championship in China, is yet to live up to  the expectations and is now lying at the eleventh position with 49.27 VPs.

At the end of the 8-round, Swiss League top sixteen teams will qualify for the knock-out stage.

About three hundred players representing 50 teams from different east zone states including Bihar, Assam, Jharkhand  and hosts West Bengal are taking part in this popular Bridge Federation of India ranking two events with a total prize money of rupees six lacs.

Earlier in the morning, West Bengal Bridge Association Secretary Arnab Guha inaugurated the three-day meet in presence of all the participating players and other WBBA officials.
