Birmingham: A colourful opening ceremony marked the start of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games on Thursday with the arrival of a 10m tall animatronic bull being the key highlight of the grand event.

The mega opening ceremony was held in Alexander Stadium.

From the presence of cars, paying tribute to the motor car industry of the city, to an intense drum-led opening, the night witnessed strong performances by charismatic performers.

A four-metre-high puppet of William Shakespeare entering the stadium also made the event attractive.

Pakistani Nobel Laureate Malal Yousafzai, who became a Birmingham resident after receiving treatment there when she was shot by the Taliban as a teenager in Pakistan, also was a part of the event where she said: "As we watch incredible athletes of the Commonwealth Games, each child deserves the chance to reach their full potential and pursue their wildest dreams."

The Prince of Wales Charles officially declared the 22nd edition of the Games open.

The Prince of Wales was quoted as saying by the official website of the Games: “Tonight, in the words of the founder of the Games, we embark once again on a novel adventure here in Birmingham, a pioneering city which has drawn in and embraced so many throughout its history."

The events of the Game will begin from Friday and will continue till Aug 8.

More than 5,000 athletes from 72 nations will participate in the event to clinch 280 medals.
