In a rain-interrupted day, New Zealand top order were left badly hit as three batsmen- Martin Guptill (13), Tom Latham (1) and Henry Nicholls (1)-perished early as the scorecard read 23-3.
Earlier, India were bowled out for 316 runs.
Cheteshwar Pujara (87), Ajinkya Rahane (77) and local lad Wriddhiman Saha (54 no) remained the top scorers for the side.
Matt Henry picked up three wickets for New Zealand.
