Australia beat England to lift tri-series title

Perth, Feb 1 (IBNS): Australians showed they are ready for the World Cup as the hosts defeated England by 112 runs in the final of the Carlton Mid One-Day International Tri-Series to lift the title here on Sunday.


Posting 278 runs for the loss of eight wickets, Australian bowlers then bowled out their Ashes rivals for 166 runs in 39.1 overs.

It was Glenn Maxwell's brilliant all-round performance and a strong attack by pacer Mitchell Johnson which made all the difference for the hosts.

After reducing Australia to 60 for four, England were looking to make a stronmg mark in the last competitive match ahead of the World Cup. But, Australian star Glenn Maxwell smashed a 98-ball 95 while

Mitchell Marsh  added 60 as their fifth wicket stand of 141 runs helped the side reach 278 on the scoreboard.

James Faulkner hammered a quick-fire 34-ball 50 where he hit four boundaries and equal number of sixes.

Stuard Broad took three wickets for England while James Anderson scalped two wickets in the match.

Maxwell (4-46) and Johnson (3-27) destroyed the opponent as they kept struggling against the hosts who performed brilliantly with the ball.

Moeen Ali (26), Joe Root (25), Ravi Bopara (33) and Stuart Broad (24) were the only batsmen to cross the 20-run mark.

The rest of the English lineup failed to perform with their willows.

England have lost 13 of their last 15 one-day internationals against the hosts in Australia.

England will play two more warm-up clashes in the country before starting their World Cup campaign against Australia on Feb 14.
