12th South Asian Games: India tops medal tally with 14 golds, Sri Lanka in second with 4 golds

Guwahati, Feb 6 (IBNS) : Host country India dominated the second day of the ongoing 12th South Asian Games (SAG) by winning 14 gold medals and secured top position in the medal tally followed by Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Indian athletes dominated in all events as won five golds in wrestling, four golds in swimming, three golds weightlifting and two gold medals in cycling.

Sri Lanka won four gold, 10 silver and seven bronze securing second position in medal tally while Pakistan won a gold, two silver, three bronze medals, Bangladesh bagged a silver, eight bronze, Nepal bagged a silver, two bronze and Afghanistan started their campaign in the 11 days long multi sporting event by capturing a bronze medal.

In wrestling event, Indian wrestler won gold medals in Women 48kg, 55kg, 60 kg and Men 65kg, 57kg category.

Damini Gowda of India bagged the gold in the 100 m Women Butterfly Stroke Swimming event while K A Hiruni Perera and Machiko Raheem of Sri Lanka  bagged silver and bronze respectively in the same event.

Matthew Abeysinghe of Sri Lanka continued his dominance in swimming , bagging the gold in the 100 m Butterfly Stroke event.

Gururaja of India bagged gold in the 56 Kg category in the Men’s weightlifting event while the Wrestling contingent bagged a total of 5 Gold in various categories.

Nepali weightlifters bagged a silver and a bronze medal while captured a bronze in wrestling.

Indian woman cyclist Bidyaluxmi Tourangbam claimed the first gold for the country by winning in the 30 KM Individual Time cycling event.

In the event another Indian cyclist Chaoba Devi had won the silver medal and Pakistan’s Sabiha Bibi got the bronze.

In the Men’s cycling 40 KM event, Arvind Panwar of India won the gold while Manjeet Singh (India) won silver and Sri Lankan cyclist Janaka Hemantha Kumara Gonagalage won the bronze medal.

In Men’s swimming 200 meter Freestyle event, Md. Mahfizur Rahman of Bangladesh won the Gold while Matthew Abeysinghe of Sri Lanka won the Silver and Saurav Sangvekar of India won the Bronze medal.
