Zohra Sehgal cremated in New Delhi

New Delhi, July 11 (IBNS): Actress Zohra Sehgal, who lived 102 years and acted in many memorable roles regaling audience with her electrifying on screen energy and sense of humour before she died on Thursday, who was cremated here on Friday.

Her last rites  were performed at the Lodhi Road Crematorium by her son Pawan. Her daughter Kiran, her grandchildren and other family members were present.

Several prominent people attended the funeral, including the Bollywood couple Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar besides Prasar Bharati CEO Jawahar Sircar. Also present was former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and M.K. Raina.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned her death.

She died in a Delhi hospital on Thursday.

Born on April 27, 1912, she commenced her career as dancer with Uday Shankar in 1935 and worked with him for the next eight years.

She has appeared in many Bollywood films as a character actor as well as in English language films and television series.

The legendary actor-dancer also appeared in Bhaji on the Beach (1992), The Mystic Masseur (2001), Bend It Like Beckham (2002), Dil Se.. (1998) and Cheeni Kum (2007); and the TV series, The Jewel in the Crown (1984), Tandoori Nights (1985–87), Amma and Family (1996).

At the age of 90, she got the lead character around whom the story revolved in the 2002 film 'Chalo Ishq Ladaaye', where she had stunt sequences, emotional scenes, among others.

Segal also acted with Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) and Prithviraj Kapoor's Prithvi Theatre for fourteen years.

She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998, Kalidas Samman in 2001, and in 2004, the Sangeet Natak Akademi.

She bagged the Padma Vibhushan honour in 2010.
