We shouldn't harbour extreme perspective towards men : Tollywood heroine

Kolkata, Sept 2 (IBNS) Taking a moderate stance in the battle of sexes, Tollywood actress Payel Sarkar says recent rail blockades and clashes in West Bengal between men and women commuters over an exclusive suburban train for women office goers, were more of an exception and both sides should be accommodating and tolerant about each other's situation.

Payel, the female "anti-man" lead in upcoming release Jomer Raja Dilo Bar, was speaking at a discussion titled 'Celebrating Womanhood' cautioned against harboring any extreme perspective towards men while ruing the thin line of discrimination still remained in vogue in society.

"While it is true women are physically not as much resilient as men in some cases and there are need for reservation of seats for females for the very reason, I find it illogical not to leave seat for a 70-year old man standing before me in a public transport like bus," she told IBNS in reply to a question.

"The Matribhumi incident [over a Sealdah-Ranaghat-Sealdah Matribhoomi Ladies’ special EMU local train for women passengers] has no links with feminism and it happened in heat of the moment as both men and women were in a hurry to reach office and home and since half of the compartments of the train were not much crowded the male passengers felt why they can't avail the train. Again women passengers also wanted to travel hassle-free, but everyone's side should be looked into. We all know how hard-pressed every commuter in Sealdah section are," the Chotuskone actress says.

Payel, also having delivered a string of blockbusters including the recent Jamai 420, was supported by two other women achievers - fashion designer Agnimitra Paul and singer Lagnajita Chakraborty as the discussion was moderated by the film's director Abir Sengupta.

Earlier while talking on feminism, Payel wonders why every woman is given the tag of feminist if she talks about equal rights.

"If for talking on the issue of deprivation you are branded as a feminist, I am happy being a feminist."

Agnimitra, the well known fashion designer, recalls how since her childhood in a Burdwan town she had never felt being discriminated and always encouraged by her parents to "follow her heart."

Alarmed over the daily reports of abuses of women and girls in the media, she says: "I will inculcate values of being respectful towards girls in my two sons as a mother."

Produced by Pramod Films and Anushree-Abir entertainment 'Jomer Raja Dilo Bar' will be released in Sept.
